Classification of Construction Cranes
Lifting mechanisms with a rotating platform are used in urgent operations: for the construction or emergency repair of small structures, bridge building, and roadway construction. These tower cranes are quickly delivered to the site and assembled.
The rotating platform includes a frame and beams that bear the main load. Winches are mounted with a bracket, while a counterweight is installed on the base. These cranes have relatively low lifting capacity and cannot lift to significant heights.
Cranes with a non-rotating tower are more powerful and used for high-rise construction and tasks requiring high lifting capacities. These models feature a fixed platform, but the top of the tower includes a movable head. For greater stability, a jib and counterweight are attached to the top. Non-rotating models can lift loads up to 75 tons to heights over 200 meters.
Construction cranes are also classified by support type:
- Mobile — move around the construction site. The equipment is mounted on a mobile axle. This structure can be transported to a nearby site without disassembly. Mobile cranes are typically used for urgent projects.
- Stationary — for long-term projects. These models are installed on a foundation and cannot be transported without dismantling. In this setup, there’s no need to vertically fix the tower.
- Self-raising — installed inside a building. The base rests on the floors, and the crane is lifted using a winch. Its height increases as the building rises.
- Attached — without a chassis. Installed on the building’s foundation, with the tower fixed to the wall. This increases lifting height.
The tower’s design affects lifting capacity. Lattice tower cranes are strong and lightweight but cannot lift heavy loads. Their towers consist of metal tubes, angles, and perpendicular rods.
Solid wall cranes are heavy but reliable. They are necessary for large-scale construction, especially in adverse weather and low temperatures.
The most common tower crane boom designs are beam and luffing types.
